Every build starts with a dream. Sometimes it’s a wish for a better quality of life, sometimes it’s from an idea borne of refined tastes, and quite often, as in the case of Adrián Coto it is the connection with the land that speaks most to him in his projects. Clarity of vision and setting out the blueprint of boundaries and the wish list of a project are what create solid foundations for projects to succeed. Understanding what the desired outcomes are for the client are critical in the onset of a project and what allows Coto Company to fulfill their client’s wants.
The concept of the house “Light & Breezy” was to have the most natural look possible, including elements of wood, a connection with Nature and to have the massive elements that are present look as though they are floating. It was a seemingly juxtaposition of ideas. To provide support, yet have the beams seamlessly fit into the structure and overall design. Wanting a convex shape using traditional structural guidelines, all within the seismic scale permissions, while also using traditional materials yet in a newly thought out way. To get these clean cut lines, using materials designed for longevity, all the while not covering the walls with toxic paints, rather using the natural essence of the cement to highlight the space and serve its simplest function, a connection to the ground on which we walk. One must throw themselves into the deep analysis and critical thinking that leads the vision in order to carry it through. A natural look with a finished, modern and clean style, the ability to strike balance between solid and sturdy foundations. Being able to encompass the feeling of flight via shape and form of high pitched ceilings. Using line curvatures with live cuts in materials to shape and mould into a desired form. And so, the hunt for fresh and innovative ideas to make the project come alive had begun.
Having travelled to Bali to study and absorb local knowledge, Adrián took inspiration for the roofline from across the globe. Best of all for this project was his extensive structural knowledge and earlier years of experience in engineering and developing commercial properties on a massive scale. A deep analysis of the structure and its support was required. Reaching into his innate and learned wealth of knowledge, the method Coto Company developed for a fool proof approach on how to do things the correct way had come to be tested. It turns out, tried true and tested, they can say their firm’s methodology allows for a smooth process from start to finish. Change management is key in how projects are approached. A reconciliatory attitude goes a long way. “I’m here to serve and get the job done”, says Adrian. His team is able to provide accuracy with 3D renderings which allows clients to visualize the end product before they even truly begin. Every project receives multiple inputs from the various experts within the company. This allows for each project to be built on spec and done right from the get go. When catching up at the build site of “Light & Breezy” the building looks pristine, no cracks or repairs to be found, only smiles, and this, many years later.
