FORECAST
Go ahead and enjoy November, and a Blue Moon, or any other socially distanced celebration you are planning for these coming months. But be ready for the swells that are coming in the next 60-90 days. Tons of long-period SSW swell is slated to fill in for all of our big wave magnet areas and this is setting up to be one of the best surf holiday seasons we have seen in years. It will be a great time to pull out those bigger boards and take a surf trip before our smaller summer swells come in late Jan thru April. Great time to visit the far north breaks like Playa Negra or go far south to Pavones and enjoy one of the longest lefts in the world. Enjoy these swells and for those adventurous types keep an eye on the Caribbean and the Hurricane swells that will push through as well. Tons of swell on the way for everyone to enjoy all over Costa Rica.
Ethan’s Recent Competitions
Recently in the month of October I traveled from Costa Rica to Nags Head Beach, North Carolina where the NSSA National surf competitions were held. I was treated to some amazing East coast swell and my first time back in competition for over eight months. I won the overall rankings in my age group for the season and had a great time seeing all the international competitors. The excitement was high and I am back in the country and ready for the start of the Costa Rican national circuit that will start back up in January. This will be a big moment for all of us competitors that have been on the sidelines for the last few months. Keep an open eye for the surf season’s starting competitions, they are always fun to attend. I look forward to seeing you on the beach!
Recommendations in Costa Ballena
There are many surf breaks, for all levels, along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Many of which could be categorized as world class, it’s not only Playa Hermosa, just outside of Jaco that boasts a great break year round. Further down the coast where the line-ups thin out, we have many breaks that provide consistent waves year round. Playa Dominical being a perfect example. Of course, when a big swell hits, even better!
During the “Green” season, when it rains, big waves are a normal sighting. During the summer season, January until April, it’s the prefect time for beginners to get out there and take advantage of the smaller swells. For advanced surfers, when the swell is small, it’s a great time to hit the road and visit the far North breaks like Playa Negra, or go far South to Pavones and enjoy one of the longest lefts in the world.
There is tons of surf and swell for everyone to enjoy all over Costa Rica and year round, we definitely know when the “Surf’s up!”.
