The Costa Ballena Lifeguards is a community-run organization that traces its roots back to Dominical in 1996. Known for its world-class surf, this coastline also presents serious dangers to casual swimmers. Strong rip currents and powerful undertows make these beaches hazardous—especially for those unfamiliar with ocean safety or unable to swim. Before the lifeguard program began, the area averaged around 20 drownings a year.
What started with a single portable tower and two dedicated lifeguards has since grown into a vital community service, now operating two permanent towers on the region’s most popular beaches, Playa Hermosa and Playa Dominical, and is staffed by a team of five trained lifeguards.
As our community continues to grow, so does the need for support. The Costa Ballena Lifeguard program relies almost entirely on donations to operate. Contributions go toward lifeguard salaries, training certifications, insurance, rescue equipment, tower maintenance, and a host of behind-the-scenes costs that keep the program running. In recent years, it has been a challenge to meet these needs, with the program often operating month-to-month.
Thanks to several generous donations this year, the program is staying afloat—but long-term sustainability remains uncertain.
If you live here, rent your home, own a business, or simply fell in love with these beautiful beaches, we invite you to get involved. You can join the $1 a Day Club, set up monthly or annual donations, make tax-deductible contributions through U.S.-based donation channels, or, for those inspired to leave a lasting legacy, even donate a new lifeguard tower.
With increased funding, the program can expand in meaningful ways. We hope to hire additional lifeguards, offer better wages to retain skilled professionals, repair and upgrade the original Dominical tower, and invest in community outreach. One of our goals is to launch a Junior Lifeguard program to educate local youth about ocean safety, while also increasing volunteer involvement to strengthen community ties.
Together, we can keep Costa Ballena safe for everyone who comes to enjoy its magic.
Keep your eye out for many of their fundraiser events throughout the year. The Barú River Float has quickly become a favorite!
