The South Pacific of Costa Rica offers many different beaches to surf. From family friendly to rocky reefs great for exploring. One of my favorite stretches of beach is from Playa Hermosa to the Whale’s Tail located within the Marino Ballena National Park. On any given weekend this beach is packed with family enjoying the sand and water, as well as surfers of all ages and levels.
One of my favorite spots is a bit to the North of the main beach called “Punta Achiote”. This is a little cove and boasts a super fun right/left-hand wave that breaks off the rocks and the cove. It has a small river mouth entrance so it’s a great spot to cool down and rinse off once you’ve finished a surf session.
Further down the beach, where the lifeguard station is situated, this would be considered the mid-beach or main beach of Playa Hermosa. Here, there is an amazing beach break set up that has endless waves for all levels. For those that want a little more privacy, I recommend hiking up the beach towards the park and what is the North side of the Whale’s Tail, here you will find several untouched parts of the beach and many little waves that break with no one else around.
If you are visiting the Ballena Coast and are here to surf, I highly recommend visiting this area as there are many more surf spots to hit up, like Playa Dominical, Playa Ballena (at various points) in the Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and especially our gem of the Osa, Playa Hermosa.
